Performance: Toyota Highlander vs. Ford Explorer

When it comes to shopping around for a new SUV, Smyrna drivers will always consider performance, and the new Toyota Highlander brings more to the table.

Each Highlander configuration is available with a V6 engine that provides 295 horsepower, and this engine comes standard across the majority of the lineup. If you want more horsepower in the Ford Explorer, you will have to upgrade to the high-end Sport or Platinum trims, which will cost close to $50,000.

The Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with a V6 engine. You can access these capacities in the base trim level, but if you want to tow a comparable load in the new Explorer, you need to upgrade to the Sport or Platinum configuration.

When you compare the Highlander V6 to the 2019 Explorer’s base configuration, the Highlander fuel economy puts the Ford to shame. Drivers will get an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with the 2019 Highlander. The Explorer only offers Smyrna drivers an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway.

The new Toyota Highlander is also available as a Hybrid, and this configuration is both more fuel efficient and powerful than other models. The 2019 Explorer doesn’t have a Hybrid model.

Safety Features: Toyota or Ford?

Atlanta-area drivers deciding between the Highlander vs. Explorer can make their decision easier by thinking about the needs of their passengers. Comparing the Highlander V6 to the baseline Explorer trim level, only Toyota offers the following standard safety features:

While these features are available in the upgraded Explorer trims, others are not available. In addition, upgraded Highlander models offer a Bird’s Eye View camera. No comparable feature is available in the 2019 Explorer.
