What is Toyota Safety Sense™?

TSS 2.5

If you’ve been browsing the new vehicle inventory at Marietta Toyota, you may have noticed that each vehicle comes with a suite of safety features in their descriptions. These features are part of the innovative Toyota Safety Sense™ system. As one of the most reliable driver-assist systems on Marietta roads, and Toyota Safety Sense™ has an amazing reputation for keeping drivers and their passengers safe on their daily drives.

There are four types of Toyota Safety Sense™ packages available to Smyrna drivers – whether you are buying a new or a used Toyota vehicle. Read along with Marietta Toyota as we go over the differences between each Toyota safety package – including the new Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS-2.5) – and the features they offer.

Toyota Safety Sense™ Packages

Toyota Safety Sense™ system debuted in 2015 with the Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) and Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) packages. The system uses a combination of cameras, radar, and lasers mounted in a vehicle’s windshield, front grille, and bumpers to monitor other vehicles, objects, and pedestrians on Kennesaw roads. If an object or another vehicle is detected, the system will use audible and visual alerts to indicate that the driver needs to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver doesn’t respond in time, the system will step in and either apply the brakes or move the vehicle to prevent a collision. There are four main types of Toyota Safety Sense™ packages, with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS 2.5) being the latest model. Follow along with Marietta Toyota to learn the basics of each package below.

Toyota Safety Sense™ Features

Multiple features are included in each Toyota Safety Sense™ package. Each system uses a combination of cameras, lasers, and radar to keep an eye out for potential hazards on your Atlanta commute. Read about each feature below:

  • Automatic High Beams: This feature uses a camera mounted on your windshield to monitor nighttime driving. The system will automatically engage or disengage your high beams as it detects the headlights and taillights of oncoming vehicles.
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (also available with Bicycle Detection): This feature uses an integrated camera and radar system to reduce the likelihood of colliding with a vehicle or pedestrian by giving the driver alerts, and engaging the brakes automatically if necessary.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (also available with Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control): This feature uses a radar located behind the Toyota badge on the front grille and a camera on the windshield to adjust your speed and maintain a respectable distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Lane Departure Alert (also available with Steering Assist and Road Edge Detection): The feature alerts you if your vehicle begins to drift from your lane. It can also act on your behalf if you don’t respond.
  • Lane Tracing Assist: This feature works with the Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and visible lane markers to keep your vehicle centered in its intended lane.
Road Sign Assist: This feature works with the forward-facing camera to detect “speed limit”, “stop”, “do not enter”, and “yield” signs on your commute and displays them on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
  • Intersection Support: This feature is new with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5). It works with front-facing cameras and radar to detect any vehicles or pedestrians that are in an intersection. The system will alert the driver if another vehicle or pedestrian is in the intersection when they try to complete a turn.
  • Emergency Steering Assist: This feature is new with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS-2.5). It helps stabilize the steering wheel when a driver swerves to avoid another vehicle, pedestrian, or object in their lane. The feature works to keep the driver in their intended lane while avoiding oncoming traffic and other pedestrians/objects.
