What Makes the Corolla Such a Safe Car?

When shopping for your next vehicle, you deserve to choose from a stunning selection of models that deliver excellent features, including advanced driver assistance technology designed to keep you and your passengers safe every day. This is a big part of why we love offering the Toyota lineup: Toyota provides a remarkable number of sedans, trucks, and SUVs with excellent features to meet all of your needs.

If you’re looking for a small car to help you make the most of your daily routine, then a Toyota Corolla for sale near Sandy Springs is a fantastic option. But what if overall safety is a top concern for you? Well, you’re in luck because the Corolla is one of the safest cars on the road—but you don’t have to take our word for it…

Just How Safe Is the Toyota Corolla?

This is a great question and the perfect place to start when looking at the Corolla and deciding whether or not it can protect you and your passengers as you drive around Sandy Springs. The Corolla is an incredibly safe car, in part due to Toyota’s legendary commitment to excellent performance and handling. You get an engine that’s not too powerful, although it still provides a great drive for a compact sedan.

Front-wheel drive is standard, which is perfect for maintaining control since it puts the powered wheels under the weight of the engine. With power steering and power-assisted disc brakes (on both the front and rear wheels), it’s easy to maneuver as you drive and safely come to a stop when you need to—but what do the experts say?

NHTSA: Five-Star Safety Rating

First, we have the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is part of the US Department of Transportation. It tests and rates vehicles each year based on a wide range of conditions and criteria, including performance in different types of crash tests and evaluations of driver assistance technology.

The NHTSA gave the 2025 Toyota Corolla a five-star safety rating, which is the highest rating it offers. This sedan received five out of five stars in both front and side crash tests, with safety technology that meets the performance criteria of the NHTSA. (This includes things like a forward collision warning, which we’ll get to in a moment.)

IIHS: Top Safety Pick

Alongside the NHTSA, the other major safety group in the US is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a non-government organization backed and funded by auto insurance companies. The IIHS tests vehicles each year to see how safe they are (including conducting crash testing) so that insurance companies can understand the risks that different sedans, trucks, and SUVs present on the road.

The IIHS named the 2025 Corolla a Top Safety Pick and rated it as Good (its highest rating) in crashworthiness, crash avoidance and mitigation, seat belts, and child restraints. In fact, it rated the rear-seat LATCH system for children’s car seats as Good+ since it provides numerous tether and lower anchors that are easy to use, so you can safely fit one or two car seats into the Corolla.

Between these two ratings, you can see that the 2025 Toyota Corolla has proven itself to be an incredibly safe and reliable vehicle. Although we know a lot of people prefer SUVs for families these days, it’s nice to know that you have options if you want to shuttle your family around Sandy Springs in a sedan. And if you’re looking for something larger, the NHTSA gave the midsize 2025 Camry a five-star safety rating, while the IIHS actually named it a Top Safety Pick+ for how well it protects everyone.

Toyota’s Innovative Safety Suite

We always look for great ratings from safety groups, but just as important are the ways that your vehicle works to keep you safe. With the Corolla, you’re looking at an incredible selection of standard and available features designed to protect you as you drive around Sandy Springs. The 2025 Corolla comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features that complement your safe driving habits and provide you with additional support when the situation calls for it. These features include…

Pre-Collision System w/ Pedestrian Detection

This is Toyota’s name for its forward collision alert. The Pre-Collision System can warn you about a potential collision and provide automatic braking to help you avoid it or reduce its impact. With Pedestrian Detection, it works to keep others on the road safer, too.

Lane Departure Alert w/ Steering Assist

With this system, you get a warning when you seem to be drifting from your lane as you drive, often due to a brief distraction or loss of focus. It can also make minor steering corrections for you to help keep you in your lane when you seem to be wandering, which is a bonus.

Lane Tracing Assist

Along with the Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, the Lane Tracing Assist system can detect lines along the sides of your lane and help you stay centered in your lane as you drive. This is a great feature to make your daily commute less demanding.

Road Sign Assist

One of our favorite little features is Road Sign Assist, which can recognize certain road signs as you drive and emphasize them on your digital driver display. This makes it easier to stay on top of changes in speed limits and other indicators you need to be aware of as you drive around Sandy Springs.

Automatic High Beams

This system can automatically toggle your Corolla’s high beams on and off based on surrounding conditions as you drive. It can switch them off to avoid blinding drivers in oncoming traffic and then turn them back on once you’ve passed others on the road.

Proactive Driving Assist

Part of the comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, Proactive Driving Assist can provide gentle braking and corrective steering to help maintain a safe distance between you and other vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Finally, this system lets you indicate a preset distance between you and a vehicle ahead of you, and then it will adjust speed to maintain that safe distance. It can even go from highway speeds to a complete stop, making your daily commute a lot easier and less stressful.

Available Features That Improve Safety

While every 2025 Corolla trim comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, there are some available options that you can add to make your vehicle even safer. Chief among them is a Blind Spot Monitor that can warn you about vehicles lurking in one of the blind spots alongside your vehicle so that you don’t change lanes into them.

You can also get a Rear Cross-Traffic Alert that warns you if someone is about to pass behind your vehicle as you’re backing up to help you safely get out of parking spots, driveways, and similar situations. We should note that these two features are standard on all 2026 Corolla trims, although the NHTSA and IIHS haven’t tested or rated the 2026 Corolla just yet.
