Before we go into the details of the model years you'll find in our inventory, you might find that you benefit from knowing the history of this sedan. Just how did it evolve into the crowd-pleaser that it is today? What makes it such a popular pick among a diverse array of buyers?
Toyota debuted the Camry in 1983, showcasing an initially boxy design that came as both a sedan and a hatchback. Fitted with front-wheel drive and a four-cylinder engine, the Camry could come with either an automatic or manual transmission. When it entered its second generation, the Camry had a more streamlined appearance and an available V6 engine while still sticking with the two transmission choices. It was also the first time Toyota offered the Camry as a station wagon.
The third-generation Camry switched from being a compact to a midsize sedan with a much larger frame. Its body showcases smoother lines, giving it a distinctly '90s look. A coupe was added for the 1993 model year, but it was discontinued in 1996. The fourth-generation Camry went back to a boxy look, but its strong build quality remained intact.
In 1999, the Solara came onto the scene, giving the Camry more diversity with its five-speed manual and a snappy V6. It offered a sleeker appearance than the regular Camry sedan and could even come as a convertible!
The fifth-generation Camry hit the market in 2002 and was given enhanced braking capabilities and an upscale interior focused on the less-is-more approach. Two years later, the Camry Solara’s second generation was released, quicker to accelerate than the sedan and still quite elegant.
From 2007 to 2011, the Camry’s sixth generation served ample power from an available V6 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This was the first generation to be sold with a hybrid powertrain. The seventh generation ran from 2012 to 2017 and showcased more aggressive styling and a quick V6; ride comfort was also a highlight for this generation.
The Camry’s eighth generation amps it up in terms of sportiness. With its lower center of gravity, enhanced aerodynamics, and less weight, this Camry is adept at zipping up to speed in no time at all. A small facelift in 2021 added even more enjoyable modern aesthetics, and a Camry TRD was released in 2020 for enhanced sportiness, even adding a rear wing to the setup!
The 2025 model year launches the ninth generation of the Camry, with it being a clear revision of the much-loved eighth generation. Their doors and rooflines might be the same, but the revamped interior and AWD hybrid option make it clear that Toyota is focused on meeting the changing needs of modern drivers.
